Sabor Latino Fire, Rome, Italy 13/03/2010
On the night of 13–14 March 2010, a fatal fire occurred at Sabor Latino, an unlicensed nightclub and cultural association operating in a basement on Via Cappadocia in the San Giovanni district of Rome. The incident resulted in the deaths of four young individuals, all of whom succumbed to smoke inhalation. The victims comprised a 24-year-old Romanian man, a 25-year-old Peruvian man, a 25-year-old Salvadoran woman, and a 21-year-old Guatemalan woman.
The fire was reported to have originated from an electrical failure, most likely involving a short circuit or a malfunction within the sound amplification system positioned near the centre of the venue. The premises consisted of a garage of approximately 200 square metres that had been converted for use as a cultural centre. It was subsequently confirmed that the venue lacked the legal authorisation and safety provisions required for hosting dancing or nightclub activities. Public statements made after the incident indicated that municipal authorities had previously prohibited such use of the space due to non-compliance with safety regulations.
Investigations and witness testimony revealed serious deficiencies in fire safety management. Emergency exits were reported to have been locked or obstructed at the time of the fire, preventing effective evacuation and directly contributing to the fatalities. While approximately 40 other patrons were able to escape via the main entrance, those who became trapped were unable to access alternative means of egress. The incident highlighted the severe risks associated with unlicensed venues operating without adequate fire safety controls and enforcement.
