What occurred

A Volkswagen Polo driven by Didier Arias, with Héctor Núñez as co-driver, left the road during the Giulio Cesare–Mina Clavero special stage and rolled repeatedly into an area occupied by spectators.

Three spectators were struck. Braian Ezequiel Zárate González, aged 25, died after transfer to Hospital Luis María Bellodi. A 40-year-old woman sustained a reported ankle or lower-leg fracture, while her minor daughter sustained less serious injuries.

The competitors were reported uninjured. Emergency procedures were activated and the event was definitively stopped.

What is established

Final casualty position: The FIA and strongest later reporting support one fatality and two surviving injured spectators.

Vehicle sequence: Video and witness accounts show loss of control on a bend, contact with rocky terrain or an embankment, and repeated rolling into occupied space.

Cause: The precise initiating mechanism—driver error, vehicle failure, terrain contact or a combination—was not established in a published final technical report.

Event statusRound 2 of the FIA CODASUR Rally Championship, jointly held with the Argentine Rally Championship.
Stage positionBetween approximately kilometres 1 and 2 of the Giulio Cesare–Mina Clavero stage.
Investigation statusNo completed judicial, FIA, CODASUR, ACA or engineering report was located through 15 July 2026.
Loss-of-control warning

Descriptions involving a stone, embankment or rocky edge are preliminary reconstructions. They do not establish whether terrain contact initiated the loss of control or followed it.

Incident and response sequence

Before 19 April · Event planning
Supplementary regulations identified the organisers, named officials, route programme and medical and security responsibilities. Pre-event publicity referred to spectator areas, but evidence about physical delimitation was inconsistent.
19 April · Vehicle leaves the stage
The Volkswagen lost control on a bend, contacted rocky terrain or an embankment and rolled repeatedly towards spectators between kilometres 1 and 2.
Immediate response
Medical, rescue and police teams attended. Three spectators were transferred or treated, and a crisis response involved organisers, security authorities, ACA, CODASUR, provincial authorities and health services.
Hospital outcome
Braian Zárate González died after hospital transfer. The adult woman was reported out of danger with a fracture, and the minor sustained less serious injuries.
Competition suspended
The organisers definitively stopped the event. Later sporting classification based on the position when racing stopped did not represent a resumption.
Judicial and sporting inquiries
Prosecutor Analía Gallaratto ordered technical examinations, witness interviews and video analysis. The FIA stated that it would support the investigation.

Operational circumstances

🏁
Loss-of-control zone
The final trajectory carried the rally car beyond the road and into occupied space. The exact course geometry and projected vehicle path were not published.
📍
Area status unresolved
Sources variously described an enabled viewing area, undelimited spectator arrangements and a location that may have been reoccupied after safety vehicles passed.
🚓
Continuous enforcement
Participant commentary questioned whether more police or continuous control was needed. Staffing and marshal deployment at the precise impact point were not verified.
🚑
Emergency activation
Medical, rescue, police and event procedures were activated, followed by hospital transfer and definitive suspension of the competition.
⚠️ Evidential limitationThe evidence does not establish whether the victims were within an approved area, an inadequately marked area or a location from which they had previously been directed to move.

Spectator-safety considerations

The available sources identify matters requiring examination in rally spectator planning. They are presented as evidence-led considerations rather than final findings of legal or sporting responsibility.

Trajectory-based exclusion

Spectator areas should be assessed against foreseeable loss-of-control paths, including the outside of bends, embankment contacts, launch points and repeated-roll trajectories.

Physical delineation

The sources disagree on whether viewing zones were physically delimited. Maps, signs, tape, barriers and marshal positions should correspond to the actual hazard boundary.

Reoccupation risk

If spectators had been moved before the stage and later returned, a transient safety-vehicle clearance would not have provided continuous control. The factual basis for this account remains unverified.

Stage-start assurance

No record was located showing whether the immediate sector was confirmed clear immediately before the competitive car entered the stage.

Incident reconstruction

Speed, initial contact, vehicle trajectory, spectator coordinates and course geometry would be required to determine whether the location sat within a foreseeable escape path.

Post-incident governance

No final judicial, FIA, CODASUR, ACA or Rally Argentino report, sanction or permanent spectator-control change was located in the supplied research.

Accounts requiring qualification

Six material differences were identified across official, local, international and participant sources.

Casualty classification
One fatality and two surviving injuries
Evidence position A

FIA and strongest later reporting state one death and two injured.

Evidence position B

Some early reports referred to three injured people.

The early figure probably counted the spectator who later died among the three initially injured. One fatality and two surviving casualties is the strongest final position.

Woman’s injury
Ankle, leg or fibula fracture
Evidence position A

TN and Cadena 3 described a fractured ankle.

Evidence position B

International reporting used the broader terms fractured leg or fibula.

No primary hospital bulletin identifying the precise bone was located.

Spectator-area status
Approved, undelimited or reoccupied
Evidence position A

Infobae described an enabled public viewing area; pre-event publicity referred to authorised zones.

Evidence position B

A pre-event La Voz report said areas would not be physically delimited, while Gastón Pastén said spectators may have returned after being moved.

The final safety plan and mapped forensic findings were not available.

Place of death
Hospital or scene
Evidence position A

TN, Infobae and Cadena 3 state that Zárate González died after transfer to Hospital Luis María Bellodi.

Evidence position B

A secondary account described death at the scene while also referring to transfer and confirmation at hospital.

Death following hospital transfer is more consistently supported.

Loss-of-control mechanism
Stone, embankment or general loss of control
Evidence position A

Infobae reported contact with a stone or rocky edge.

Evidence position B

Other international reporting described the car clipping an embankment before rolling.

No final vehicle examination or accident reconstruction established the initiating mechanism.

Victim’s name
Braian Ezequiel Zárate González
Evidence position A

Infobae and TN use Braian Ezequiel Zárate González.

Evidence position B

Some indexed local reports used Brian or Brahian.

The full Braian spelling has the strongest multi-source support.
