Fatal Structural Incident

Big Church Festival 2026 was scheduled to run from 28 to 30 August at Wiston House/Wiston Estate near Steyning, West Sussex. Sussex Police were called at approximately 15:38 BST on Friday 28 August after reports that a large sign had fallen and injured a number of people.

A 41-year-old man from Eastbourne died at the scene. He was subsequently identified by his church and by the festival as Pastor Robert Guanco.

The later, more detailed South East Coast Ambulance Service information recorded five further people assessed and treated, four of whom were transported to local hospitals. Two were described as having more serious injuries and two as having less serious injuries.

Festival Closure & Investigation

Friday programming was stopped. Day visitors were instructed to leave, while campers were directed back to their campsites and told to await updates. The festival was later brought to a complete close, cancelling the scheduled Saturday and Sunday programme.

Sussex Police remained on site on 29 August carrying out enquiries for the coronial process and gathering evidence to assist Horsham District Council in a joint investigation. The Health and Safety Executive and the local authority were informed.

The official sources had not established a final engineering or mechanical cause for the sign’s fall by 6 September 2026.

⚠️ Evidence StatusThe source record does not establish the precise engineering or mechanical reason why the sign fell. Reports of wind or gusts are witness/media context and must not be presented as an official causation finding.

Conflicting & Unresolved Information

The casualty count changed as more precise ambulance information became available, while the cause of the structural failure remained under investigation.

Casualty Count
Initial ≥6 survivors versus later five assessed and treated

The first police and organiser statements gave a higher preliminary casualty estimate than the later SECAmb-linked police update.

28 August · Initial reports

Sussex Police said at least six other people were injured and taken to hospital. The festival said at least seven people were injured in total, including the fatality.

29 August · Later update

Five further people were assessed and treated; four were transported to hospital, with two more serious and two less serious injuries.

The later ambulance-derived figure is the most detailed operational count, but the earlier official higher figure remains part of the record.

Hospital Transport
Four later confirmed transports

An unqualified statement that at least six survivors were hospitalised would conflict with the later ambulance breakdown.

Initial police wording

At least six other injured people were said to have been taken to hospital.

Later SECAmb breakdown

Five survivors assessed/treated; four transported; two more serious and two less serious.

The final database wording should distinguish the evolving reports rather than silently selecting one.

Cause
Wind not established as the official cause

Several media reports included witness accounts concerning wind or gusts, but the official investigation had not announced a final cause.

Media / witness context

Festivalgoers were quoted attributing the fall to wind, and weather observations were reported from Shoreham.

Official position

Police and organisers said the circumstances were still being established through ongoing enquiries and the joint investigation.

“Cause under investigation” is the source-supported formulation.

Police Reference
Operation Igloo

Sussex Police repeatedly instructed witnesses to quote Operation Igloo when submitting information or footage.

Verified wording

Police and Horsham District Council were conducting a joint investigation; witnesses were asked to quote Operation Igloo.

Avoid

The police source does not explicitly establish “Operation Igloo” as the formal title of the investigation itself.

Unverified Details

No official source located through 6 September 2026 established the following propositions.

Engineering Cause
No official source established the precise engineering or mechanical reason why the sign fell.
Installation / Securing
It was not verified that the sign was inadequately secured or improperly installed.
Structural Defect
It was not verified that the sign was structurally defective or non-compliant with event safety requirements.
Wind Causation
Wind or strong gusts were not established by an official investigation as the cause of the collapse.
Final Investigation Finding
No published final HSE, Horsham District Council, coroner or Sussex Police conclusion assigning responsibility had been identified through 6 September 2026.
Six Hospitalised Survivors
The later primary-source ambulance information specifically records four transports, so all six initially reported survivors should not be described as confirmed hospital admissions.
