A wooden staircase leading from a bridge to a canal in the Dutch city of Utrecht has collapsed during a concert, seriously injuring eight people.
Police in the Netherlands launched a criminal investigation today into a stairway collapse during a music concert on Utrecht’s ancient central canal that left 20 people in hospital.
The accident occurred near the Stadhuis bridge on Oude Gracht at about 21:45. Concert-goers were crowded onto an old stairway that led from the street to the wharf, and were listening to a salsa band when the stairs collapsed. Some people fell into the water, and debris rained down on others who were in a boat on the water at the time.
