A wooden staircase leading from a bridge to a canal in the Dutch city of Utrecht has collapsed during a concert, seriously injuring eight people.

Dutch police launch probe into canal side stairs collapse

Police in the Netherlands launched a criminal investigation today into a stairway collapse during a music concert on Utrecht’s ancient central canal that left 20 people in hospital.

STAIRS COLLAPSE DURING UTRECHT CONCERT

The accident occurred near the Stadhuis bridge on Oude Gracht at about 21:45. Concert-goers were crowded onto an old stairway that led from the street to the wharf, and were listening to a salsa band when the stairs collapsed. Some people fell into the water, and debris rained down on others who were in a boat on the water at the time.

AMSTERDAM — Utrecht City Council has hired outside experts to investigate the collapse of a wooden canal stairs during a concert on Sunday night, Mayor Annie Brouwer told a press conference on Monday.
