NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A stampede triggered by a false alarm brought Saturday night’s Global Citizen Festival in Central Park to a sudden stop.
Thousands of people went running to get out of the park when concert goers thought they heard gunshots at the crowded event.

NEW YORK — Fearing possible gunshots, it took only the collapse of a police barrier at a politically charged New York celebrity music show Saturday to send thousands of spectators fleeing in panic.

NEW YORK — Fearing possible gunshots, it took only the collapse of a police barrier at a politically charged New York celebrity music show Saturday to send thousands of spectators fleeing in panic. The NYPD has confirmed that the loud noise was actually a barrier near the stage that fell over, CBS New York reports.

Organizers say the NYPD has identified the triggering sound, which many mistook for gunfire, as “an attendee(s) stepping on and popping a drink bottle(s).”
