Kontrast discotheque fire, Novi Sad, Serbia, 01/04/2012

The Kontrast discotheque fire occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 1 April 2012, in the city of Novi Sad and resulted in the deaths of six young people. The incident took place at the Kontrast nightclub, a warehouse-style entertainment venue, during a live music performance attended by an estimated 300 to 350 patrons.

The fire was reported to have broken out at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time near the stage area. Subsequent investigations concluded that the most likely cause was a fault in the electrical wiring. The six fatalities—three men and three women in their twenties—died from smoke inhalation. Initial reports incorrectly described some of the victims as teenagers. The victims were discovered close to a bathroom that had been mistakenly perceived as an exit, while one individual was found less than half a metre from a functioning emergency exit, indicating that disorientation and panic significantly impeded evacuation.

Emergency response was delayed, with reports indicating that the fire service was notified between 15 and 30 minutes after the fire began. Legal proceedings following the incident determined that required fire protection measures had not been implemented. As a result, the nightclub owner and two individuals renting the premises were detained and later sentenced to prison for safety violations.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the mayor of Novi Sad declared three days of official mourning. The Kontrast fire drew renewed attention to persistent deficiencies in fire safety management within the city’s nightlife venues, particularly as Novi Sad had previously experienced other fatal incidents, including the Lounge café fire in 2008 and the Putnik hotel fire in 2007.
