The fire was ignited by welding activity that caused sparks to come into contact with nearby flammable materials within the building. While construction and retail workers occupying other parts of the structure were evacuated, patrons inside the nightclub were not alerted to the danger and were consequently trapped. The rapid development of the fire led to a flashover, overwhelming those inside the venue. The incident is recognised as one of the deadliest fires in Chinese history and is regarded as the second deadliest nightclub fire on record.
