Police used teargas in response to a pitch invasion by rioting fans, causing a crush among panicked spectators.
Thousands of Arema supporters invaded the pitch and threw bottles and other missiles at players and football officials after their sides first home defeat by an arch rival in 23 years, leading to clashes and the use of a chemical weapon banned at stadiums by FIFA.

MALANG, Indonesia, Oct 2 (Reuters) – A stampede at a soccer stadium in Indonesia has killed 125 people and injured more than 320 after police police used tear gas to quell a pitch invasion, authorities said on Sunday, in one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.

The death toll was revised down to 125, according to East Java Vice Governor Emil Dardak, who said that some names were recorded twice. Earlier officials had put the figure as high as 174.
Chaos broke out after Persebaya Surabaya defeated Arema Malang 3-2 in Saturday night’s match in East Java’s province Malang city. Police said there were some 42,000 spectators in the stadium, all of whom were Arema’s supporters because the organizer had banned Persebaya fans in an effort to avoid brawls.
