A fire tore through a makeshift wedding hall in southern India Friday, killing 45 people, including the groom, and injuring the bride and dozens of guests, officials said.

TIRUCHI, JAN. 23. Forty-nine persons were killed and about 50 injured in a devastating fire during a wedding at a marriage hall at Srirangam in Tiruchi district of Tamil Nadu today.
The Principal District Court here on Wednesday sentenced Ramasamy (65), owner of a wedding hall in Srirangam, where a fire accident in 2004 killed 64 people, to two years rigorous imprisonment. It also directed him to pay a compensation of `50,000 each to the dependants of the victims and `10,000 each to those injured in the accident.
Electrician Murugesan was also found guilty but his sentence- six months rigorous imprisonment- was not lowered as the main cause of the accident was unsafe drawing of electricity connection.
